Having a blog can be great but only if there are people actually reading it and sharing it. And let’s be honest: whether you’re blogging for profit or for your own personal satisfaction, you don’t just want a few people to read your blog. You want dozens, hundreds, thousands of people to read your blog and share your posts.
Putting more hours into your marketing each week will help people find your blog, but if you want them to actively share your posts it’s important to optimize your blog for sharing.
Here are 6 simple ways you can make it easy for people to share your blog:
- Social share buttons
If you don’t have these set up on your blog yet, you need them, right now. Shareaholic is an excellent plugin for WordPress blogs that allows you to customize where you put your share buttons, but there are many other fantastic options also. Add them to both the top and the bottom of your post to truly optimize for sharing.
- Regular list posts
Your content shouldn’t be entirely list posts unless that’s specifically the theme of your blog because high quality list posts are some of the most shareable content out there. The more informative the list, the more traction you’ll get.
Learning to make your own infographics doesn’t take more than a couple of days and it is one of the best things you can do for your business. Images of all kinds are more likely to be shared but infographics have an even higher chance of being shared thanks to the information they contain.
- In depth content
While short posts have their value and are still preferable in certain niches, longer posts are on the rise. If you can delve deeply enough into a topic to write a 1,000-2,000 word article that helps people tackle a specific issue, you can create a post that people want to bookmark, comment on and share with all their friends.
There’s more than enough evidence to suggest that speed is a ranking factor in Google, but beyond speed being an important ranking factor, having site that loads quickly means you lower the number of people that abandon your site without ever seeing your content. There are a number of plugins available for optimising your website for speed. WP Smush it is frequently recommended as a top plugin by prominent bloggers.
- Just ask
Have you ever considered asking for people to share your content? Your followers want to know how to support you, and there’s no better way for them to know than if you straight up ask them. Don’t beg or plead or ask every few sentences—just ask once at the end of the post, saying something like “if you enjoyed this article, please share it with your friends”. You’ll be amazed how many people jump at the chance to share your message, people who wouldn’t have thought of it if you didn’t ask.
Building a substantial blog following isn’t easy and creating awesome, shareable content is always a hit or miss process, but you can consciously take steps to encourage people to share your work.
